Danish Vikings were known to have travelled west from modern Denmark starting in the early 7th Century A.D.
Stowing away on the boat of a Viking, Ivar set sail with the ship from the Danish coast. Danish Vikings were skilled in axes, short swords and wooden shields. They also carried spears or javellins to throw at the enemy before battle.
Ivar wanted to be a Dane too, so he made an axe and shield of his own on the long journey at sea.

Welcome to Northumbria, a Viking kingdom in the north of England.
This is the capital of Jorvik, known to modern day rats and people as York, England.
Ivar raided with the Vikings, and collected his own share of the loot in the hold of the ship.
After fighting with the local rats and more raids on the cellars of Christian churches, he was ready to find new adventures.
When the Vikings invaded England in 793 A.D., they sacked an abbey at Lindisfarne, in Northumbria.
Untold gold, silver and jewels were looted from the abbey, and most of the monks were killed by the pagan Vikings.
These raids increased in number until 865, when a Viking named Halfdan Ragnarsson claimed the throne for his own and ruled Northumbria until 877 A.D.

Welcome to Scotland, the land of the Picts, who called this land Albion.
The Picts were a tribal people, but were fierce warriors who painted their bodies in blue clay and could enter a berserker trance in battle.
Ivar marched north with the Sons of Ragnar.
He waged battle with the fierce Picts and tested his strength against Scottish rats during the siege of many strongholds and cities.
Ivar befriends a Scottish cow named Malcolm.
Malcolm showed him where to find the best cheese in all of Albion.
Ivar would let Malcolm remain free, for now.
Halfdan Ragnarsson and his brothers marched north from Jorvik and invaded this land shortly after they avenged the death of their father, Ragnar, in Northumbria.
Soon, it was time to seek new adventures.

Ireland is a land rich with fertile soil and a strong people. Most of the inhabitants of Ireland are Catholic, and groups of families called clans are the main government. There hasn't been a King of Ireland for many hundreds of years.
Ivar joined the invasions in search of wealth and glory. The Irish were fierce warriors and defended their lands with skill and determination. Ivar tried to play hurling with the local rats. Hurling is a traditional Irish game with sticks and a ball, similar to field hockey. But the games always ended with both teams beating each other up with sticks, which was too much like Ivar's job as a Viking to be much fun.
Halfdan Lodbrok, son of Ragnar, launched an invasion of Ireland in 795 AD. For the next 20 years, Vikings would try to invade the island or send raids to loot and pillage the Irish monestaries.
Over a period of 5 years, Dublin changed hands from the Irish to the Vikings and back again three times. The Irish were mostly divided by major families, called clans, and only united in the face of the pagan Viking invaders.

Iceland had long been settled by various people from Scandinavia, Ireland, and Scotland. The settlers had maintained a mostly farming and fishing society and had paid homage to the Norwegian Kings for many years.
Around 820 AD, the local rulers decided that Norway was a long way away, and would not listen to the Norwegian King any longer. They decided to rule themselves. The Vikings did not view this very well, and sent raiders and armies to defeat Iceland.
Ivar arrived with these raiders and helped to reclaim the island, bringing the island kingdom back to Viking rule.
The farming, fishing, and riches from raiding make this a great place for Ivar to settle for a while. He tried his hand at fishing, but it turns out that nobody makes nets in his size. His plans at creating a powerful, world-wide fishing empire were put on hold until someone invented a rat-sized fishing net.

During the time of the Vikings, Greenland was a land of plenty, waiting to be settled. The southern coast of the large island was able to grow crops during a 4 to 5 month season, and the cod fishing was good enough to feed whole armies.
Viking families settled on Greenland around 982 AD, where times were tough. But the cod fishing and the fertile soil was able to be tamed for summers of long days and short nights.
Ivar would settle here for a while, raising oxen and sheep, and fishing for cod in the North Atlantic waters. His ship would be filled with salt cod and mutton before exploring or raiding once more. Ivar still didn't know why the land was called Greenland, when there was so much snow and ice. He thought it was a good joke to call it Greenland, though.

Normandy is a very rich and wealthy land. Good farms and rich soil helped the Viking settlers to grow prosperous. Wine flowed and England was only a few hours away by ship for raiding. It was an ideal Viking land.
Ivar spent many days in France eating cheese and drinking wine. He took some of the grape seeds he found and buried them in a hole in the ground. This annoyed a mole named Christopher that lived in the hole, but Ivar told Christopher that he was now a winemaker and Ivar wouldn't charge him for the seeds. Ivar was sure that Christopher would thank him later.
Amongst the Danish Vikings, the family of Lodbrok is well known through history. One of these was Rollo, who led a band of Viking raiders to the northern coast of France. He even raided the Frankish kingdom of Francia.
Rollo was such a successful raider that the Frankish King gave him land in present day Normandy as his own to rule. But he had to stop attacking the Franks. Rollo was the great-great-great-great-great grandfather of a famous Norman, William the Conqueror, who invaded England in 1066 AD and became King.

Danish Vikings landed and raided settlements in the southern part of England starting in the early 7th Century A.D.
They went ashore to pillage settlements and return loot to their ships.
There was a Viking invasion of the Saxon and Angles kingdoms in 865 AD. It was called The Great Heathen Army in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle.
3 of Ragnar's sons sought to avenge his death and expand their kingdom southwards.
This invasion lasted 14 years, with every Saxon and Angle kingdom defeated, except Wessex.
The Vikings were eventually defeated in May of 878 AD.
To venture here was a height of battle and valor for a Viking like Ivar.
To this day, the myths of *The Sons of Ragnar* about this invasion are still told in Norse homes.
Ivar travelled with the Great Heathen Army to Wessex.
He spent time looking at the rocks at Stonehenge.
He had figured out what the stones were for.
But the Wessex rats heard he had solved the mystery of Stonehenge, so he was forced to bury his notes and flee.
One day, he'll dig them up again and be famous.

Vikings travelled to a land they called Vinland, which is is present day Newfoundland, Canada. They briefly settled in this area and began to raise crops and build defenses.
The settlement was short-lived, and evidence of the settlement was found in the 1960s by archaeologists, so there is still much to be learned.
Ivar would have been an excellent explorer. He raised crops in the soil, fished for cod off the coast, and trapped furs for use in clothing and blankets for the cold winters. Times were hard in Vinland, and the local rats were not friendly. Ivar was still looking for vines that the land's name had promised. If he could find some, he would take the seeds to Christopher.

Having survived the exploration of the Vikings, Ivar was ready to lead adventures of his own. With a ship he had built near Lindisfarne, Ivar was ready to set sail on adventures with his own band of raiders.
You begin with one ship, five rats, one loot, one weapon and one shield. As you travel from one port to another, you will collect items along the way. But beware! There are chances you will encounter native rats that will try to stop you. They will randomly appear. Some fights you will win, some you will lose. When you run out of 'rats', the game is over. At any time you can press the 'Retire' button and return home with your riches.
